Arnie Berman, a 6-foot 7-inch forward from Short Hills, New Jersey, broke every Brown University scoring record previously set by Mike Cingiser, and added a few records of his own along the way.
An incredibly accurate shooter, Arnie shot jump shots that had eyes. Putting it up with a straight-line trajectory, he was as effective from outside as he was from the corners. Using both hands to cradle the ball, he had a graceful follow-through on his jumper. Even though he was right-handed, it sometimes looked as though he was shooting it left-handed.
And speaking of left-handed, Arnie spent a number of summer perfecting a left-handed hook shot. After shooting right-handed for most of the game, he would pick his spot and move into the pivot. Once in mid-lane, he would get a pace and fake his opponent to the left, and then wheel to his right and sink a beautiful lefty hook.
Defensively, Arnie was a master at boxing out for rebounds. Watching him set up to take a rebound was like watching a textbook demonstation. He would back into his opponent and then bend forward, moving his opponent further away from the basket. Then he would extend his arms to keep his opponent from going around him.
He led the team in rebounding for 2 of his 3 seasons.
Arnie had fantastic stamina, the result of hours of daily practice in the off-season. He was one of those extraordinary players who get stronger as the game goes on. For almost his entire career, the fourth quarter belonged to Arnie Berman.
As opponents weakened in the late stages of the game, Arnie poured the points through the hoop. As tired players will do late in games, when they couldn’t stop him, they fouled him. A very bad move, as Arnie was one of the greatest foul shooters in Ivy League history.
Combining all his skills, Arnie Berman finished his career as the All Time leading scorer for Brown University with 1,688 points.
He still holds 10 Brown University records, including: free throws made in a career (636), free throws made in a season (250), and free throws made in a game (25).
In his senior season he averaged a Brown University record of 25.2 points per game. He was selected First Team All Ivy League, All New England, and All East.
Arnie Berman was selected to the Brown University All Century Team. He is a member of the Brown University Athletics Hall Of Fame.
