Steve Chubin, a 6-foot 2-inch guard-forward from Forest Hills, New York, was a tremendous all-around basketball talent.

He looked like Tarzan, and played basketball the same way, constantly flying through the air.

Steve played mostly at forward, but he utilized all his guard-like skills from that position. He would keep popping his accurate jump shot until his opponent moved closer. Then Steve would fake him out of his shoes and drive the baseline.

Steve could match outside jumpers with anyone in the game, but he seemed to really enjoy the rough and tumble of play in the lane and under the basket.

He was a player in a non-contact sport who loved contact. He sought out opponents like a heat-seeking missile, and he was at his best when the going was rough.

He had no fear of challenging the big men guarding the lane, beating them with speed, agility, and a great touch.

Steve was a demon on the offensive boards. He thrived on being outnumbered in the lane and still coming away with the ball, and then, through heavy traffic, putting it back up and in with a jumper, or a drive, or an acrobatic lay-up.

Steve made it all look easy. He was a free spirit and played basketball the same way.

He was completely at home and comfortable on the hardwood court. Shooting, driving, passing, taking rebounds, or playing tough defense, he always seemed to be enjoying himself immensely. His gliding strides up and down the court just oozed confidence.

Opponents had no idea how to stop him, and his delight at being unstoppable was apparent in every move he made.

For a physical player, his style of game was not one of intimidation. There was a flow and breeziness to his play that made it seem like the natural state of affairs that he was the best player in the game. His teammates knew it, and opponents never seemed to question it. It just was.

When opponents double- or triple-teamed him, Steve had a knack for passing to a teammate for a wide-open or easy shot. Even though he was a great shooter and scorer, he was a very unselfish player. He was always among the team leaders in assists as well as points.

Steve led Rhode Island to the Yankee Conference title in 1965-66, and he finished his career as Rhode Island’s all-time leading scorer with 2,154 points.

He was a member of the USA Gold Medal winning basketball team in the 1965 Maccabiah Games held in Israel.

Steve went on to play in the ABA, setting a record by playing for 4 different teams in each of 2 consecutive years.

After his ABA days he played in Italy for one season and with Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Israeli Basketball League.

Steve Chubin is a member of the University of Rhode Island Hall of Fame.
