Mike Cingiser, # 53 in your program, a 6-foot 4-inch guard from West Hempstead, New York, was a smart basketball player. He had an innate understanding of the game, and was well versed in the fundamentals.

As the basic idea is to score more points than the other team, Mike poured the points through the hoop non-stop. His main weapon was his outstandingly accurate left-handed jump shot. But Mike could score with either hand.

All he needed was a clean look at the basket for a split second and it was money in the bank.

Mike was one of the first of an innovative new breed: the big guard. At 6-foot 4, most colleges were more likely to have a player that size at the forward position.

Mike preferred to play outside. He was much more effective with the game in front of him. And his shooting eye was not hindered by distance.

Mike had all the guard tools including being quick-handed and light on his feet.

Mike was also one tough customer. He could not be intimidated, and he played with a rough-and-tumble style that did Intimidate the opposition.

If there was physical contact, you could bet that Mike would be in the middle of it.

If the opposition backed away, then Mike scored on them at will.

If they didn’t, he went around and through them scoring on drives and pull-up jumpers in, and around the lane.

When Mike rumbled to the basket there were not many opponents willing to stand in his way.

With his size he was able to rebound with the best forwards in the Ivy League, offensively and defensively.

He also had the quickness to get down court on the fast break, and handled the ball with enough dexterity and savvy to either score the bucket or find the open man for an easy 2-pointer.

Mike Cingiser finished his career at Brown as their all-time leading scorer with 1,331 points.

He was the first of only two Brown players in the history of the school to be named 1st Team All Ivy League 3 times.

Mike was a member of the Gold Medal winning U.S.A. basketball team in the 1961 Maccabiah Games held in Israel.

Did we say Mike was smart? He returned to Brown as the head basketball coach, and led the team to Its only Ivy League Championship in 1986.

Mike Cingiser was selected to the Brown University All-Century team. He is a member of the Brown University Athletic Hall of Fame, and the New England Basketball Hall of Fame.
