Ernie Grunfeld, a 6-foot 6-inch forward/guard from Forest Hills, New York, was a 2-time All America, and teamed with Bernard King at the University of Tennessee for what became known as the Bernie & Ernie show. Individually, and together, they dominated the Southeast Conference.

Built like a weight-lifter, there was nothing muscle-bound about Ernie G. His agility, for a man his size, was unmatched. His body control was outstanding, and his determination was iron-willed.

As a forward, he was the immovable object. He was never off-balance for a shot or a rebound, and he garnered plenty of both. In fact, Ernie set a Tennessee record with 2,249 career points, and 967 rebounds.

As a guard, he was equally formidable. He set up the offense with his ball-handling skills, and also shot his amazing jumper from outside. Using his muscle, he was also able to penetrate right to the hoop for turbo-like lay-ups.

He also had great floor vision. Many times Ernie would spot a free teammate under the basket and get him the ball in exactly the right position for him to score.

In his sophomore year, he was the 2nd leading scorer in the SEC with a 23.8 points per game average. As a junior, he led the SEC in scoring with a 25.3 point per game average, and set an SEC record for points in a season with 683.

Ernie G. was a 3-time All SEC selection, and a 2-time All America.

He played for the Gold Medal winning USA basketball team in the Maccabiah Games held in Israel in 1973, and was the leading scorer with a 20.0 points per game average.

He earned a Gold Medal with USA basketball team in the 1975 Pan American Games, and the 1976 Olympic games.

Ernie went on to play in the NBA with the Milwaukee Bucks, the Kansas City Kings, and the New York Knicks.
