Mike Berger, a 6-0 guard from Brooklyn, New York was Rochester University’s Mr. Wonderful. As a scorer, dribbler, feeder, and hustler no one came close to him in all-around ability. A perfect blend of talent and hustle, and a playmaker par excellence.
Offensively he played many different roles doing just about everything with the ball but toss it up for jump balls.
Defensively, he played opponents as close as a second skin.
A top-notch clutch performer if you ever saw one.
Mike was a firebrand competitor and a crackerjack of a guard who could 2-hand set-shoot with the best of them.
His jump-shots were incredibly accurate and he could convert them from just about anywhere on the court.
His defensive talent, his flawless feeding and floor generalship, made him the driving force of his team, always playing hard and invariably playing beautifully.
Sometimes he was the Traffic Cop, slowing down the play and directing a teammate to a certain spot where he would hit him with a scoring pass ... or execute a picture-perfect give-and-go.
Leading the fast break, Mike could really handle that ball, whether driving and spinning down the lane for a score ... or dishing off to a teammate free for an easy lay-up.
In Rochester, Mike Berger was Mr. Excitement.
Sometimes he was the Snake Charmer, coaxing the defense closer so he could drive around them on one of his patented whirling dervish scoring plays.
Tenacious at both ends of the court, Mike was a one-man defensive press. Agile and as quick-handed as a pickpocket, he was responsible for many a change of possession … most of them ending with Mike scoring at the other end.
Mike led Rochester in scoring in both his junior and season seasons, winning the Rufus Hedges Trophy as the team’s Most Valuable Player both years. He was named Small College All America in both those seasons.
Mike Berger finished his career as Rochester’s All Time leading scorer with 1,129 points. He is still #1 in career scoring average with 20.0 ppg.
Mike is a member of the University of Rochester Hall of Fame.
