Dave Newmark, a 7-foot tall center from Brooklyn, New York, joined the Columbia Univerrsity basketball team for the 1965-1966 season as a sophomore and made an immediate impact on the Lions’ fortunes, as well as the entire Ivy League.

Hardly a traditional center, Dave was not one for the standard low post, hook shot type of center game. While he was devastating underneath, unlike most college centers, Dave had a tremendously accurate jump shot, which he could hit from the perimeter as well as close in.

In fact, Dave’s best weapon was his high post turn-around jumper. As he was also very quick and had an excellent vertical leap, there were few opposing centers who could block the shot. Honed in schoolyards all over Brooklyn, Dave’s jumpers were actually more accurate than those of most college forwards.

Although Dave set up in the high post most of the time, he was still agile enough to be an excellent rebounder. He led the Ivy League in that department as a sophomore, while using his jump shot to propel him to also lead the league in scoring with a 22.4 points per game average.

To say that Dave never took one single easy rebound in the Ivy League, is only slightly overstating the case. He was Constantly double- and triple-teamed, with those opponents trying desperately to box him out, or physically drape themselves all over him.

It didn’t work. Dave fought through every tactic used against him, and still came away with the rebound. Offensively or defensively, Dave’s rebounding prowess was the key to Columbia’s winning ways.

He was a tough and determined player, and never let himself be pushed around or overpowered, no matter how many were sent to stop him.

Dave was named First Team All Ivy League in 2 consecutive seasons, 1965-66 and 1966-1967. As a sophomore, in 1965-66 he was named All America.

Dave played for the Gold Medal winning USA basketball team in the 1965 Maccabiah Games held in Israel.

Drafted by the Chicago Bulls, Dave became the tallest Jew to ever play in the NBA. He played 1 season with the Bulls and 2 seasons with the Atlanta Hawks. He finished his stateside career with the Carolina Cougars of the ABA.

Dave then played 1 season in the Israeli Basketball League.
