Ronny Watts, a 6-foot 6-inch forward from Washington, D.C., played basketball with an always-in-your-face attitude and style. Offensively or defensively, Ronny "came to play," and he gave his all every second he was on the court.

He understood that his number one job was to get rebounds, and get them he did.

He was a master at getting position under the basket, and once he was there he was the immovable object.

In his junior and senior years he led Wake Forest in that department.

Athough he appeared somewhat on the slim side, Ronny was deceptively strong, remarkably agile, and very tough. He was skilled at the art of boxing out, and used his long arms to keep from being bulled away from the basket. He also had an excellent sense of timing, knowing just when to leap and leaving opponents anchored to the floor while he soared.

The sky-high rebound was the signature of his style.

And once he latched onto the ball he refused to give it up. His vice-like grip could not be loosened, even when he was knocked to the floor. Ronny used every inch of his 6-feet-6, and pursued every rebound with a fierce intensity.

Ronny was also a tremendous defensive player, and an expert at blocking shots. His powerful leap kept many an opponent’s shot from ever reaching the basket.

A fabulous rebounder and an intimidating defensive force, Ronny was also a scorer. As he was always around and under the basket, his shots were usually short range and high percentage. Taking offensive rebounds and using his quickness, Ronny was usually the one taking advantage of the second scoring chance.

In fact, Ronny was always in motion. Quick and athletic, he was full of energy, always jumping and flying through the air.

His basketball moves were very slick, but he never wasted any energy with overdone shaking and baking. He played hard-nosed, straight-ahead, heads-up basketball, although at times he did look like the world’s tallest acrobat.

Concentration, perseverance, and power defined Ronny’s game.

Devastating as he was converting lots of put-back lay-ups and short jumpers, he also had a majestic hook shot, and he specialized at hitting it on the move, swooping across the lane like a determined eagle, and then whipping the ball into the bucket.

Being in heavy traffic most of the time, Ronny was quite often fouled. So foul-shooting became an Integral part of his game.

As a junior he was an 83% foul-shooter. Even so, Ronny was always open to improving. After spending the summer with good friend Bill Bradley, a foul-shooting phenomenon himself, Ronny changed his foul-shooting stance, and as a senior he was even better.

Combining all his skills, Ronny averaged 19.2 ppg and 13.0 reounds per game as a senior.

He was twice named All Atlantic Coast Conference.

In 1965 Ronny was captain of the Gold Medal winning USA basketball team in the Maccabiah Games held in Israel.

Ronny Watts was drafted by the Boston Celtics of the NBA, and he played 2 seasons with them, collecting a World Championship ring.
