Dolph Schayes, a 6-foot 8-inch forward from The Bronx, New York, was one of professional basketball’s early superstars, and without question the best all-around Jewish basketball player of the 20th century.

A 4-time All Metropolitan selection in college at NYU, in his senior season Dolph would be named All America, and win the Haggerty Trophy as the Most Outstanding Player in the New York Metropolitan area. He would also set the NYU single season scoring record with 356 points.

Drafted by 2 teams in competing professional leagues that would eventually merge to become the NBA, he signed with the Syracuse Nationals, and would play 15 seasons with them. He was the top scorer in every year of Syracuse’s existence as a franchise.

Dolph was an iron man, playing 10 consecutive seasons without missing a game, including one season when he played with a cast on a broken right wrist, and an another season with a cast on a broken left wrist.

Offensively or defensively, Dolph was the "complete" basketball player. He could pass or shoot set shots, lay-ups, and jump shots with either hand.

He had incredible body control and seemed to float through the air, whether taking a rebound, or shooting his signature 1-hander gliding across the lane from either direction. And he was never off-balance. He finished every move, at both ends of the court, with the artistry of a ballet dancer.

Dolph was legendary for his prowess on the foul line. He perfected his free throw shooting by practicing with a 14" hoop fitted inside the regulation 18" hoop. He finished his career as the NBA leader in free throws attempted (8,273), and free throws made (6,979), for an awesome .844 percentage.

From 1950 through 1961, Dolph was named All-NBA First Team or Second Team every year, and played in 12 consecutive All Star games. He led the Nationals to the NBA Championship in 1955.

Dolph spent his entire playing career with the Syracuse Nationals, moving with the franchise when it became the Philadelphia 76ers.

Dolph Schayes was selected to the 25th anniversary All NBA team, and the 50th anniversary All NBA team.

He retired as the NBA All Time leading scorer with 19,239 points, and having played in 1,059 games, more than anyone else.

Dolph Schayes is a member of the New York City Basketball Hall Of Fame, The Naismith Basketball Hall Of Fame, and The International Jewish Sports Hall Of Fame.
